First Pixel by SoulSpade First Pixel by SoulSpade
This truly is my first ever attempt at pixel art, so of course, it's in need of improvement. I want to say that I had fun doing this, but honestly, I was put in a bad mood by it; I really wanted to do well. I owe you all for helping me at least get something done; I'll have to see if it's something I want to continue

Right now, I'm not so sure

You did a great job for your first pixelart! I'll say this though: learn to love your line tool. :p

I think you did rather well for a pixel though.

... Oh haha wow, this came out really cute xD That looks really good! It feels like you have mixed opinions about it, though... :c I wish you felt better about it, because it honestly looks nice. You shouldn't be so down if it's not pixel perfect, no pun intended. Nothing most of us do is completely perfect, and pixel art is no exception. Goodness knows I hardly do the best job of it myself.

I hope you can feel inspired to try again soon, and that you can be happy with whatever the outcome is. Just know that we all think you did great.

I think it's adorable! I love how you managed to get such soft colors even in pixels.

For future reference, I would recommend always working with sizes that are to the power of two. (128x128, 256x256, 512x512 etc) This'll help things when resizing!

Wow! Great work for a first pixel-work. If you want to see my first...DX I deleted it in shame...
The shading is fairly smooth, the eyes have a very nice gradient. I love how you subtly textured the mane! It can be hard at such a small scale, but you're getting it! Great job with the slight green background. The white is a nice touch so your pony "pops out".

Are you kidding me -.-

I can't even do pixel art so yeah, I envy you hahaha XD

Don't worry you'll get better in time as you do them as often as you like, but don't go overdo, you might get sucked in of no return haha!

I think it's really good for your first one! Nice use of gradients and color pallete is nice too.
If I could give a tip, if that's ok, your lines like the one on the left of the neck and the one going across the horn, the hair line to the left of the eye etc, they have a jagged look because some of the pixels are either clumped together or the pattern of pixels in the line is really infrequent, if you need more control, zoom in and try to get those lines uncluttered and it will make them nice and smooth.

Also just wondering, did you get the gradient on the eye that smooth by going through and changing the colour on each pixel or did you not use a photoshop block 100% pencil tool? Cause that can give some undesirable results.

I changed the pencil's opacity setting to pen pressure when I did the shading. I felt it was the only way to get it to look any amount of decent (it was my second attempt, after almost giving up) Now I see that it puts into question whether this is even pixel art. I've just been feeling unconfident about it

Don't stress ok :) it still looks good and you did well. I don't know about you but I hardly get anything right or have much knowledge of anything when I try something for the first time! If pixel art is something to feel like you want to learn more about, like I said in my message keep practicing and look for well informed tutorials online to learn the limitations and restrictions of 'true' pixel art if you want to take that route. Other than that, just do what feels right and fun, don't fret over the learning process!

It's a very great first attempt :D
Some advice: To make lines look a bit more delicate, let the pixels only touch each other on one corner and not overlap. It makes the lines less rugged :)

Did you enjoy it? Then keep doing it. You'll naturalle improve. If it wasn't fun (and I mean the process itself, not the feeling of "I'm bad at this"), then stick to drawing. I did a lot of pixel work some years back and had tons of fun with it, maybe I should pick it up again ^^ Just do whatever makes you happy!

That is actually a pretty good start for a first attempt. My very first pixel art attempt was so bad it self-combusted.

Though, as someone already pointed out, you might want to keep down on the colour count. There are various ways to blend colours without having to actually add colours inbetween the two blending ones. Dithering is one of many examples of how to do it.

If something, check out *Kiwinuptuo. He is an A-MA-ZING pixel art artist and he is my huge inspiration for it. He has some tutorials covering choises of colours, step-by-step shaping and texturing. Looking at his work has really helped my pixel arting when I hit a road block.

Well, even being your first try on this kind of art, you did quiet a good job. But if I don't have fun doing then the you shouldn't, there is no meaning in doing something you don't like, even if you are good at it.

No, it's not that it looks bad. It actually looks pretty good. The real 'issue' is whether we could call this pixel art.

What I mean is that there are some really fine gradients here. Unless you literally hand picked all 1443 unique colors for every pixel (a pixel with 60 red, 60 green, 60 blue is a different color from 61 red, 60 green and 60 blue), then there was a tool used that picks colors out of your control.

There's a reason why I recommended MS paint, except win 7 version. MS paint has absolutely no ability to create colors out of your control ;)

If it helps: This is what making pixel art looks like: [link]

I see. I guess it shows how little I know about this stuff huh?

I used Photoshop, as it's all I have on this computer. I went with the suggestion of a friend to set my pencil tool's opacity to be changeable by pen pressure. In that way, it made tons of color tones rather than having to work with a limited number of tones.

I kinda of defeated the purpose of pixel art in that sense, so I feel stupid for saying I made "pixel art"

Oh, and if you remember what I said back in the poll, it's a good idea to start very small. When I say start small, I'm thinking of canvas sizes of 16x16, 32x32, or maybe as large as 50x50 or something like that. Do something in an 8 or 16-bit style or something.

Don't be afraid to toss out details you cannot realistically fit working at a small scale. Exaggerate the size of the head and eyes to make a character more recognizable if you have to, especially if you try making stuff in incredibly tiny sizes.

Pixel art works pretty differently from digital painting, but it's totally new experience nonetheless.

Lol, suggestion from a friend? Yeah, it's pretty easy to swallow bad advice and not know any better. :iconpinkieshrugplz:

It is possible to make pixel art with photoshop, but you just need to stay away from such tools and you're golden.

It's hard to say what's hardest. Everything was difficult and unnatural to me. Probably the shading most of all; I feel it looks sloppy and misplaced for pixel art.
